It’s so dependent on size and aircraft type.. It varies so much. With some models like my 500 size Sikorsky S-51, no ballast is needed. For others, like my 500 size Apache and UH-34, the noses are stuffed with lead. It definitely tends to be more problematic for aircraft with short nose sections, and long raised tails.
Fully agree, as demonstrated by pool.
Adding too much weight might denote a problem, typically missing dry test with all components and lack of anticipation, possibly difficult to optimize afterwards, e.g. once woodwork already glued in place.
It depends also the type of mechanic. Per example the PHT3-3 has a more rear CG than the PHT3 and PHT2.
I was able to save 500 grams with a second build of the same Bell 212 PHT2 by optimizing several things, like moving 15mm forward both engine and tank and adding a radar nose full of lead, ideal place CG wise, as model permits.
Of course, more the engine is powerful more there is range for adding weight. Recommended max take-off weight to be under radar!
