Oil that won’t spoil Your engine

Mark S.Oct 31, 2023

Carbon buildup (coking)
If you fly turbine helicopters, chances are you have read or participated in a heated discussion over which type of oil to use in your fuel mixture. Everybody has an opinion and most pilots have no idea whether their engine is degrading because they chose the wrong oil blend.

To get to the bottom of this, Heliworkshop.com (http://Heliworkshop.com) teamed up with Jakadofsky Jet Engines to crack open turbines and compare ones that use a blend specially formulated for small turbines (what we all use) with ones that use alternative blends. What we found was not surprising, but it is eye-opening.

Oils designed for full-size turbines are not meant to be burned in the turbine chamber like the oil we use directly in our fuel. For that reason, full-scale turbine oil (its additives in particular) cause coking (carbon buildup) in the engine over time. The buildup diminishes power output and damages internal parts like bearings and even the combustion chamber, itself. Aware of this issue, Jakadofsky worked with Shell Oil Company to develop an oil formula specifically designed for small engines; a formula that won’t cause carbon buildup over time. The result is PJ-W Oil and the proof is in the engine after 50 hours. We took a Jakadofsky engine (thanks Joel Rosenzweig) that had been run 47.5 hours on PJ-W and compared it with another Jakadofsky that had been run for a total of 24 hours on 2 stroke marine oil. The engine with twice as many hours was squeaky clean while the other one was filled with carbon buildup to such an extent that it needed a complete overhaul.2 stroke marine oil should never be used in a turbine.

It’s your choice, but from our perspective there is only one choice.  If you want to try what we believe is a turbine life extender and saver, head over to Heliworkshop and grab a jug or two of PJ-W.
