Chapter 1 of 1

I did a total redesign my Rotormast V-22 this yr

Aug 7, 2022

After flying one for the last 10 or so yrs and having great success last yr with my scratch built V at IRCHA and Dalton , I decided to improve some things I felt were shaky . True mine will no longer be exact scale any more .. but if it flies longer with out stuff failing and just as good ... I don't care that much about true scale !
I am getting ready for IRCHA right now but wanted to post a few pictures and will post the build ones later ,if anyone is interested .
On the 2nd picture those of you who had one will notice the lack of nacelle conversion servos and rack and pinion gears .That is because I felt that was one of the weakest spots along with the wings and their mounts . So I did like I have done on my many yrs of scratch built V's .... I built up a balsa /lite ply wing with an aluminum tube that goes thru the wing ( also making the wing more strong and durable ) and it has one servo and a lead screw in the middle to make the conversion. Both nacelles stay together and one won't fall down if the rack breaks or the servo binds or wears out . I have flown this setup all summer long and it seems to work really good so far .Although it requires running the electric wires a different place and while putting on the nacelle covers for IRCHA ,I part way unplugged one of the 3 motor wires and while doing a flying test before packing it up for IRCHA the wire came unplugged or hot enough to temporally disconnect and the right motor started spooling down after 3.5 mins of flight and a climb out check . Luckily I was coming in for a landing and was able to set it down with only a bent landing gear . Unfortunately the log that I checked showed that ESC pulled 564 degrees at that point .
After the hard landing I stood there cussing and thinking about it and checked things over for about 3 mins ... then with things still turned on so I could check stuff in the air conditioning of my shop !! I started to head back to the shop. But I stopped and decided to run it up to see if anything was broke flopping or what ever , cause at that time I didn't see the unplugged wire as it was under the nacelle covers . It lifted off and hovered for about 1min more and then my timer went off as 4 mins is all I get on the batteries .
I have hovered it after the fix for 4 full mins about a foot off the ground and it all works fine ... but now I don't trust that ESC ,,but will give Castle a call on monday and see what Joe can tell me . I can't get another quick enough to help and unless Joe is coming to IRCHA and can bring one along ... it will not fly it ! I just don't trust it any more ,and trusting your equipment is 2/3's of flying something IMHO !
