Starwood Lama 1/5th scale.
Rebuild
Having flown a Lama during Hurricane Katrina recovery back in 2005 I wanted to build an RC version. This Lama is an old original Starwood before Vario aquired the rights to produce it under their brand. I purchased it used and when disassembled found a few things that needed changed. I wanted to use electric for power and had to have a clutch and sound system. The original electric motor was "huge and heavy" and by replacing it with a Kontronik 850-240 shaved off almost three pounds. I had a very good friend David Shealey who does all my necessary machine work to modify the mechanics and clutch for the Kontronik motor. I am using a Castle 160, two 7000mah 6S for a 12S setup, Bavarian 3X. The batteries are located under the mechanics inside the dummy fuel tank for very easy battery change.
Next step was to get a more realistic lookingZY1 turbine than the small plastic one included. Having recently purchased a 3D printer I started searching for the correct files for a Turbomeca Artouste engine and found exactly what I needed at Cults3D. There were 39 seperate files and it took almost a week to print everything but the end results were well worth the effort.
The Lama I flew was equipped with external load / cargo baskets and this model needed the same.
I was advised to replace the rubber o-ring head dampers and again had David machined the replacements out of aluminum to get rid of all the unnecessary movement in the rotor head making a very solid and responsive rotor system.
This Lama flys very nice and scale and the BeierElectronics sound system coupled with the clutch has given me one of the most realistic sounding model that I own.
